King Crab Safari

Departing from Bugøynes, Norway

Are you ready to face the king of Varangerfjord?

Join our Bugøynes king crab safari by RIB boats and learn how to catch this arctic creature!  The Norwegian red king crab is one of the most important export products of Northern Norway and our local guide will tell you all about them and their invasion of the North-Norwegian coastline. On the way to our crab pots we learn also about the history of Bugøynes and Varangerfjord.

We check our crab pots together and marvel at the catch. Our guests participate in sorting out the days catch with the assistance of our guide. We pick out the crabs we want to take back and learn how to handle them afterwards. If we are lucky, we might also see some whales, seals and porpoises. Each trip to the sea is different and that’s what makes it exciting.

Seafood treat right out of the sea!

King crabs can grow up to 15kg, and their meat is considered tasty and healthy! The biggest crab ever cought from Varangerfjord has been 11kg, but the crabs we catch in our crab pot are generally 2-5kg. After the safari, you will have a meal cooked from your own caught king crab at our “Bugøynes Bistroen” restaurant. The king crab is served in the traditional Norwegian way with bread and mayonnaise. As fresh as it gets!

We have two boats, each fitting max 8 persons. A flotation suit will be provided to every participant before the tour.

Please note that this tour is weather dependent. If we are not able to go out to sea we have an alternative to visit the King crab factory in Bugøynes followed by a plentiful king crab lunch in Bistroen.

Price including King Crab lunch:
1800NOK/adult
Children under 10-14 yrs. -50%
Total duration: 2-3 hours
Note! The safari can be cancelled in case of bad weather.
